The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution proposed by the United States on the occasion of the third anniversary of Russia's war in Ukraine, calling for an end to the conflict without explicitly mentioning Russia's aggression.

The resolution was adopted on the evening of Monday, February 25, with 10 votes in favor, with five council members, including France and Britain, abstaining.

"These three short paragraphs reflect the spirit of the UN Charter and should emphasize, as it did in 1945 [the year World War II ended], that this war is terrible, that the United Nations can help end it, and that peace is possible," Dorothy Shi, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires at the United Nations, said as she presented the draft resolution to the Security Council.

Referring to US President Donald Trump's pursuit of an end to the war in Ukraine, the Reuters news agency wrote that the resolution softened previous UN positions on the war.
