Known as the "Man with the Golden Arm," Harrison donated blood and plasma for more than 60 years.

James Harrison, the man whose blood helped save the lives of more than two million babies, has died at the age of 88.

Known as the "Man with the Golden Arm," Harrison donated blood and plasma for more than 60 years.

His blood contained a rare antibody that was used to produce an anti-D drug. A drug that prevents fetal and neonatal hemolytic disease (HDFN), a fatal blood disorder.

After receiving blood in a life-saving surgery at the age of 14, he promised himself to become a donor. At the age of 18, he began donating blood and by the age of 81, he had donated blood and plasma 1,173 times.

Since 1967, more than 3 million doses of the anti-D drug have been produced using her blood and given to 2 million mothers in Australia.

Currently, about 200 anti-D donors in Australia help 45,000 mothers and babies each year. Researchers are also trying to develop a lab version of this antibody.
