Hassan Khomeini asked Khatami for an explanation regarding the rumors of the involvement of the perpetrators of the recent murders in the death of Haj Ahmad Khomeini. He also asked me for advice on what to do.

I spent the day at the Koushk office, dedicating a considerable amount of time to editing the transcripts of my interviews with Entekhab newspaper and Mr. [Masoud] Safiri. Entekhab ran a large headline stating that I had expressed readiness to participate in the elections, even though I only mentioned it as a strong possibility in the interview. Discussions and analyses by both domestic and foreign media, as well as political circles, have intensified on this topic. Opponents of moderation are displeased, while supporters are pleased. Some close associates do not view it as a prudent decision.

In the evening, I had an extended discussion with Mr. [Seyed Mohammad] Khatami, [the President], at his residence. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the Supreme Leader's stance regarding the 13 Jewish defendants, and he also voiced his distrust in Mr. [Mohammad] Niazi, [Head of the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces], concerning the military court handling the recent chain murders, despite having the authority to oversee and guide these matters. Regarding Mr. [Abdollah] Nouri and Mr. [Gholamhossein] Karbaschi, we shared similar views.

He mentioned that Hassan Khomeini had asked him for clarification regarding the rumors about the involvement of the recent killers in the death of Haj Ahmad Khomeini. Last night, Hassan Khomeini also asked me for advice on what he should do. Although he does not believe anyone was responsible for his father’s death and considers it to be natural, he sought advice nonetheless.

President Khatami expressed his enthusiasm and happiness at the possibility of my participation in the parliamentary elections. He is also concerned that the next Parliament may become uncontrollable and obstructive, and he views my presence as a key factor in ensuring better guidance for the Parliament.
