The US State Department's statement, issued on Monday, September 14th, said: "For 46 years, the Islamic Republic has ruled with torture and execution, silencing its opponents with public executions and beatings. While this regime spends its money exporting terror, it has left its people with water and electricity shortages, poverty, and dilapidated infrastructure. Iran should be one of the richest countries in the world, but its future has been plundered by a corrupt ruling class." The statement further emphasized that the "maximum pressure" policy aims to "hold the government accountable for its actions against its own people and against its neighbors."
