The University of Alabama has confirmed that U.S. federal immigration authorities have detained an Iranian student off-campus.

The university did not disclose the student's identity, but records on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) website show that Alireza Darroudi, an Iranian citizen, was detained by the agency. Records do not indicate at which ICE facility he was detained.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The reason for the arrest of this Iranian citizen has not been determined.

He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama and majored in metallurgical engineering.
