Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 19, 1992

Dr. [Ali Akbar] Velayati, [Foreign Affairs Minister], explained on the phone his talks with [Mr. Farooq al-Shora], the Syrian Foreign Minister, who came with a message from Hafez Assad regarding the Abu Musa issue, and obtained an opinion for a trip to the United Nations. I gave instructions about the [Mykonos] incident in Germany and sending weapons to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dr. [Mohammed Ali] Najafi, [Minister of Education] came. Together, we went to Javadiye neighborhood to participate in the ceremony of the beginning of the new school year at Shahid Beheshti School. A large group of people had gathered outside the school. After the ceremony, I went among them and responded to their feelings.

Primary, middle and high school children gathered and welcomed them warmly. The minister said welcome and I rang the bell for the beginning of the academic year and gave a short speech. The radio transmitter malfunctioned and the ceremony, contrary to the schedule, was not broadcast live on television. Then we went to high school and middle school for girls. I gave them a speech. I also talked with the school teachers; Their salaries have increased a lot, almost twice, and they still demand privileges.

I went to my office. Mr. [Akbar] Turkan, [Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Support] came. He gave a positive report on negotiations with the Chinese and Pakistanis and on weapons issues. They decided to follow up. Mr. [Syed Mohammad] Gharehi, [Minister of Post, Telegraph and Telephone] came. He complained about creating an obstacle in the way of buying six million switches and bidding for telecommunication satellites and appealed.

Mr. Farouq al-Shora, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria, came. He presented Mr. [Hafiz] Assad's message about the issues of Abu Musa and provided an analysis that the Arab countries, along with Iraq and Egypt and their western supporters, are trying to intensify the differences between Iran and the Arabs and take advantage of it. He commented that it is better to compromise; I accepted

Mr. [Hassan] Aminian, our ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, came in the evening. He gave a report on the situation in the UAE and negotiations with them. proposed to form a joint commission and resolve the tension. Mr. [Mustafa] Pourmohammadi, [Deputy Foreign Department of the Ministry of Information] came and gave a report on the outcome of the Mykonos incident in Germany.

The Supreme National Security Council had a meeting. We decided to agree to the proposal of the UAE regarding the formation of a joint commission and to move towards resolving the tension. Regarding the message of the German official regarding the American plans to return to Iran, regarding human rights, atomic energy, weapons, terrorism and the proposal to study the situation, a decision was made. We also made decisions about broadcasting the news of executions and controlling advertisements. I did the work until nine o'clock at night and came home.
