[Mr. Noorollah Miripanah], Director General of the Ilam Provincial Inspection Office, came and said that the province’s major projects had slowed down. He asked me to tell Mr. [Akbar] Torkan to keep his promise to give him a job in Tehran.
Mr. Seyyed-Jalal Sadatian, [an adviser to the Foreign Minister], came. He complained about the Ministry of Intelligence and the individuals who had caused him to be disqualified from the previous parliamentary elections, and asked me to help him.
Mr. [Mohsen] Rezaei, [Secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council], came and said that, in view of the Leader’s position, he had decided against establishing a political party, and that he had still not obtained the necessary resources to establish a newspaper.
At noon, Mohsen, [Managing Director of the Tehran Metro Company], came and gave a report on his trip to Denmark and Sweden for a conference on public transportation and metro systems. He said that the construction of the Copenhagen Metro, in terms of financing, is like the Tehran Metro, relying on station complexes and bank loans, and that it has therefore suffered delays. Dr. [Ahad] Milani came and obtained permission to follow up on my heart examinations.
In the afternoon, Messrs. [Ahmad] Shafiei, [Deputy Minister of Intelligence], and [Amir] Tehrani, [Deputy for Parliamentary Affairs], from the Ministry of Intelligence came and reported on changes made to the Ministry’s structure and responsibilities under Minister [Ali] Younesi. They also spoke about the damage being caused by the press under the current circumstances, possible remedies, and the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Mr. [Ali] Shamkhani, the Minister of Defense, and his deputies came. They gave a report on the Ministry’s major activities and said that no major new projects had been launched and that some previous projects had also become stalled, including the construction of a 140-passenger aircraft and others. They complained about insufficient funding to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.
Mr. Shamkhani said that the Saudi Arabian Defense Minister had told him that, during the war with Iraq, the Western countries had brought 400,000 troops and 4,000 aircraft to Saudi Arabia, charged Saudi Arabia $92 billion for the war, and, in principle, did not maintain bases there.
Today, the Leader responded to the parliament members’ letter concerning Mr. Karbaschi, effectively putting an end to their efforts, and supported the judiciary. This caused dissatisfaction among the left-wing faction and satisfaction among the right-wing faction. In today’s newspapers, the issue of Karbaschi received considerable attention.
