Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 24, 1987

I worked in my office until 7:30 in the morning and was in the meeting until 10:30. Before noon, Mr. [Ali] Fallahian, Deputy Minister of Information and Prosecutor of the Special Clergy Court - appointed by the Imam - came. He consulted about special operations and the quality of dealing with offending clerics.

A group of representatives of Khorasan province came and asked for the election of a new governor who is in their line and like-minded with Mr. [Vaez] Tabasi, and they are complaining about the actions of the Ministry of Interior. Due to boredom, I canceled the afternoon meetings.

Iraq has done mischief in the Persian Gulf and it seems that one of its helicopters has been shot down, one of our ships has also been shot, and a ship carrying Kuwaiti oil has also been shot. In the evening, the board of the parliament had a meeting. It was decided to give lunch to the families of the martyrs on the 7th of July.

I gave a speech at the seminar of the Islamic Propaganda Organization in the place of the former Baha'i shrine, [Thought Hall of the Islamic Propaganda Organization's artistic area on Hafez Street, Tehran]. I talked about the necessity of advertising. I returned to my office. I did office work.

The night of the meeting of the heads of forces was in the office of Mr. Mousavi Ardabili. Mr. [Mehdi] Karroubi [Chairman of Shahid Foundation] and Dr. [Alireza] Marandi [Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education] came and discussed the delivery of a hospital to Shahid Foundation. It was decided that the hospital will be half-finished and we will complete it from the war site and the government budget. The Persian Gulf crisis and the possibility of conflict with America were also discussed. There is really a shortage. One third of the country's budget is spent on war.
