Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 6, 1983

We had a public session; several bills were passed. At ten in the morning, I went to the President's office to discuss ways to curb inflation, and with the Supreme Economic Council and other responsible officials, we discussed the matter for several hours; the discussion is continuing. In the afternoon, the [Parliament] presiding board had a meeting. We were guests of the prime minister for iftar. A large number of the country's executive leaders, military personnel, and officials of the revolutionary organizations were present. During iftar, they announced that a jumbo jet carrying nearly 400 passengers - which had been hijacked from the skies over Shiraz this afternoon - had landed in Kuwait.

After iftar, at the President's office, with Mr. Mo'adi-khah present, we had a meeting about [establishing] the Foundation for the Compilation of the History of the Revolution; we made some progress. Late at night, I came home. Dr. Qabeleh Fati had come; Fati and her baby are well.

Mohsen and [his wife] Azam had come from Belgium and arrived at eleven. They brought the two children of Mohammad Salari, who had been sent to Iran because of his American wife's divorce. The poor children are strangers here and do not understand Persian.

Mr. [Abdolkarim] Shari'i [representative of Darab] called from Qom and was upset about the presence of Mr. Seyyed Moniruddin Hosseini among the passengers of the hijacked plane. Jokingly, I said, don't be upset, with their economic views, they will undermine their economy and will have no choice but to hand them over. I was upset and angry about the bitter incident of the hijacking.
