Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 4, 1983

In the open session of Parliament, I paid tribute to the martyred Dr. [Hasan] Ayat on the anniversary of his martyrdom. We had an interpretation of the Urban Land Law, and there was a problem with the bill of the Ministry of Construction Jihad, which I resolved. Mr. [Morteza] Fahim [Kermani] wanted help with the delivery of a number of motorcycles for the front, the cost of which was being donated by a benefactor. Mr. Engineer [Rajabali] Taheri [representative of Kazeroon] had some points concerning the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz and criticized their extremism. Messrs. [Ahmad] Salek and [Younes] Mohammadi wanted me to attend the seminar of the Islamic Associations of the banks; I declined.

At noon in my office, Mr. Karroubi [representative of Aligoodarz] came and had some points concerning current issues. Mr. [Ahmad] Alizadeh [representative of Qaemshahr] came and gave explanations about disputed issues in his constituency. Mr. [Seyyed Mahmoud] Alavi [representative of Lar] came with two Iranians residing in Kuwait - who have donated millions of tomans to the fronts and the Lamerd hospital - and they wanted help with facilitating the implementation of these matters. Mr. Mohammad Hashemi and his relatives came for the marriage of his daughter to the son of the late Gharavi -who is a student in America -. Mr. Hamidzadeh also had some reminders concerning parliamentary and clerical affairs.

In the afternoon [a group of members of] the Islamic Republic Party of Isfahan Province came. I spoke to them at length. A small child among them spoke very well; I gave him my pen and watch as gifts.  

We had a consultative meeting with the Central Council of the [Islamic Republic] Party of Isfahan Province. Mr. Ejarehdar, Deputy Minister of Interior, came and cautiously spoke about Mr. Nategh-Nouri [Minister of Interior]'s positions in his stances within the government, saying that they had led to his own weakening; he wanted to understand my opinion. An officer from the Army Armaments Department came and wanted me to intercede for his son -who had been arrested on charges of cooperating with the small groups-; as usual, at the bottom of his letter, I asked the Revolutionary Prosecutor to look into the matter. From the beginning of the Revolution until now, it has been my practice to respond to such requests, and sometimes it has also been effective; therefore, I receive a great many such requests and presumably they are not without drawbacks either, but overall, I think it is preferable.

Mr. [Mohammad-Nabi] Habibi, Governor-General of Tehran, came and gave a report on the situation of the governorate, saying that here it is not like the other governorates and the governor-general is not the authority over all provincial affairs. Various sectors operate directly without any connection to the governorate, and this situation has caused a lack of concentration of affairs, waste of manpower, lack of coordination among the sectors, and duplication of work. He is working on a plan so that, as in the other provinces, a proper procedure can be established. I also welcomed it and it was agreed that we would approve it. Mr. Mohsen Rezaei [Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps] called from Piranshahr and reported the capture of the important Gerdemand heights and pointed out its significance. He said that since the beginning of [Operation] Valfajr 2, we have suffered about two thousand martyrs, but the successes have been very great. He said that propaganda would begin tomorrow. He wanted one of the commanders to speak about the victories at Tehran Friday Prayers. I came home at night. The children were all guests. I made an omelet myself and got bread from the guards. I ate dinner and went to sleep. They came very late.
