Studying the reports and signing the personnel orders took up my time until eight in the morning. Early in the morning, the telegrams reported that last night, west of Piranshahr, our forces from the Hamzeh Sayyid al-Shohada base had launched an attack with the aim of capturing the Iraqi garrison of Haj Omran. The initial reports said that they had reached ninety percent of their objectives, that the Iraqi garrison was surrounded, and that several small posts had fallen. Ayatollah Meshkini also announced the news at the start of the Experts session. Toward noon, word came that the progress was less than the morning reports had indicated, that the encirclement was not complete, and that the Iraqis were still defending the garrison. In the afternoon, Mr. [Ali] Shamkhani [deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards] called by telephone from Urumieh and said that seventy percent of the objectives had been secured and that the fighting was continuing; the Iraqi Kurds—the Barzanis and the Socialists—were also cooperating with us. They were hopeful that it would be completed tonight. Telephone communications with the war zone are not good. Mr. Shamkhani had come to Urumieh to set up communications.
In the afternoon we also had an Assembly of Experts session; the work was not finished. Some wanted us to go to Mashhad; this was opposed. It was decided that we would resume the work next Monday.
At noon Mr. Jami, the Friday prayer leader of Abadan, came and gave indications of the possible opposition of the Qom seminary teachers' association to the leadership of Mr. [Hossein-Ali] Montazeri and their support for a council-based leadership. It was decided to investigate further. He was worried about disagreements in some places, including Khuzestan and Isfahan.
A Palestinian mujahid from inside Israel came and described the situation there. He reported the extent of the attention being given to Islamizing the struggle and spoke of the Saudi and Jordanian factions there. At night I came home. The weather is hot. Mr. Hossein Marashi, the political deputy of the Kerman governorate, came and spoke of his disagreement with Mr. [Morteza] Fahim Kermani. Mr. [Mohammad-Hassan] Zowraq [political deputy of the Broadcasting Organization] and Agha Ahmad reported by telephone the dismissal of [Mohammad] Hashemi, the managing director of the Broadcasting Organization, by the supervisory council and the appointment of Dr. [Hassan] Rouhani. Agha Ahmad reported on the letter from five or six ministers to the Imam announcing their resignation as a result of the Imam's granting of authority to the Prime Minister, and on the Imam's displeasure.
