Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – July 18, 1983

Until eight in the morning, I signed the new promotion decrees for the staff of the Islamic Consultative Assembly. At eight, the Assembly of Experts met and we made good progress. I asked Mr. Emami Kashani to lead this week's Friday prayer. At noon, I met with Mr. Sadegh Ehsanbakhsh, the Friday Imam of Rasht; he had critical points regarding rice, tea, the Islamic Republican Party, the governorship, and the صداوسیما (Voice and Vision of the Islamic Republic of Iran). In the afternoon, from four until sunset, we had a session of the Assembly of Experts. The first part of the regulations was completed. Mr. Rabbani Amlashi was elected as the second vice-chairman; the report of the commission for the implementation plan of Article 111 of the Constitution was presented; the generalities were approved, and amendments were made to the first article.

After evening prayers until nine at night, I read reports and handled administrative tasks. I spoke on the phone with the President and the Prime Minister. I criticized the raw and baseless actions and propaganda of the judiciary and the صداوسیما regarding profiteering. We are working on a comprehensive plan that is religiously and legally sound and well-calculated; such actions create obstacles. It was decided to prevent them. The Prime Minister said that the Imam also had criticisms and informed that the Imam's view is that the Minister of Intelligence should be impartial and not affiliated with the Islamic Republican Party. He agreed with Messrs. Ahmad Jannati and Mohammad Mousavi Khoeiniha; however, they do not want to impose it. Since Mr. Rabbani Amlashi is a party member, he cannot accept this position given the Imam's view.
