I told him that this was a good time to get started, because the right-wing faction and the Leader’s circle had also recognized that unless a new moderate force entered the political arena in the parliamentary elections, the Parliament would fall into the hands of the extremists.
In the afternoon, Mr. [Mohammad] Gharazi, [member of the Tehran City Council], came and gave a report on the informal meetings of the Tehran City Council. Mr. [Seyyed Ali-Asghar Mir] Hejazi from the Leader’s Office came. He brought Ayatollah Khamenei’s reply to Effat, which the Ayatollah had written in his own hand and addressed to Effat. The day before yesterday, Effat had sent Him a detailed letter through Mrs. Mansoureh, the Leader’s wife. In the letter, she had criticized the conduct and methods of the Revolutionary Court and Messrs. [Mohammad] Yazdi and [Mohammad-Ali] Movahedi-Kermani, as well as some members of Parliament and certain media outlets. She had also reported that the head of the Revolutionary Court had been reprimanded for violating the Leader’s order not to take action against Faezeh personally, and that Mr. [Ali] Razini had been told that, apart from suspending the newspaper, no further action should be taken. They had also followed up with Kayhan newspaper and the Friday Prayer leaders, urging them to stop making insulting remarks.
At the Leader’s direction, Hejazi had tried to clear up my concerns about the criticisms I had expressed several days earlier, to Messrs. [Rahim] Safavi, [Commander of the Revolutionary Guards], and [Mohammad Bagher] Zolqadr, regarding the Leader Himself, His Office, and those around Him. He claimed that all the members of the Office held me in special regard. He also expressed displeasure that, among the public and abroad, the Leader had come to be regarded as a supporter of the right-wing faction and a conservative, and said that this was the fault of those who tried to associate themselves with the Leader.
The French newspaper Le Monde wrote that Faezeh Hashemi was the most popular figure in Iran because of her courage in standing up to hard-line conservatives. Discussion in the domestic and foreign media about Faezeh, particularly the support she had received from journalists, was still continuing.
