I spoke with Dr. [Mohammad Ali] Hadi [Najafabadi, Tehran representative] about his remarks at Tuesday's Hezbollah gathering against the Revolutionary Guard. He and Mr. [Gholamhossein] Nadi [representative] of Najafabad had criticized the Guard commanders because of the shortcomings of Operation Valfajr-e Moghaddamati and activities abroad; they were right as well. As a result of poor management and disagreements, the Army and the Revolutionary Guard had been unsuccessful and had suffered heavy casualties. But under wartime conditions and given the problems facing the armed forces, this kind of approach has negative effects. At noon I had several meetings in my office.
Mr. [Hossein] Kamali, the Tehran representative, consulted me about the plans for their trip to Finland and raised the possibility of exclusionary moves within the [Islamic Republic] Party to remove Mr. [Alireza] Mahjoub. Mr. Fadaei and Mr. Mahmoudi, who were going abroad to attend to the Houses of Culture, also took a tape from me and wanted money to help with propaganda abroad.
In the afternoon, people from the Army's advisory office came and talked about Ayatollah Khamenei's self-sufficiency jihad proposal, the measures already taken, and the formation of a unit to help implement his plans. Mr. Ali Ahmadi from the Cultural Revolution Headquarters came and spoke about the headquarters' weakness and the need to strengthen it with new personnel, asking for help. Saad Mojbar, the Libyan ambassador, came; we talked about Iraq's non-Islamic groups, relations with the Soviet Union, and my trip with Ayatollah Khamenei to Libya to strengthen Mr. [Muammar] Gaddafi, and...
Mr. [Ali] Shamkhani came with a group of Revolutionary Guard officials and consulted me about pursuing the leaders of the Tudeh Party and making use of the intelligence obtained, and asked for help in coordinating the agencies responsible for this work. Engineer Chamran brought the listening device he had invented. I spoke by telephone with Mr. [Colonel Salimi], the Minister of Defense, about cooperating with him. At night, we held a meeting of the Combatant Clergy Society at the President's office. We discussed coordinating statements on economic and intellectual issues to prevent disagreements among the clergy. A verbal altercation broke out between Mr. [Mousavi] Ardebili and Mr. [Fazlollah] Mahallati. After dinner I returned home.
