Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's Diary - May 18, 1999 - Meeting with Sheikh Ahmad Jannati and Complaints about Sheikh Mohammad Yazdi for his Lack of Coordination and Agreement with the Annulment of the Tehran Elections

Meeting with Sheikh Ahmad Jannati and complaints about Sheikh Mohammad Yazdi for his lack of coordination and agreement with the annulment of the Tehran elections and informing Hashemi about filing a complaint against the "Beyan" newspaper.

Meeting with Mohammad Mehdi Mozaffari along with conveying the greetings and gratitude of his father, Ayatollah Hossein Mozaffari, for Hashemi's recent Friday sermons in support of Ayatollah Khamenei.

Meeting with Mehdi Akbarzadeh, the then-advisor to the Minister of Agriculture.

Mr. [Ahmad] Jannati, [Secretary of the Guardian Council], came. He complained about Mr. [Mohammad] Yazdi, [Member of the Guardian Council's Assembly of Experts], for his lack of cooperation in the Tehran election issue and said that he wants to file a complaint against the "Beyan" newspaper and Mr. [Seyed Taghi Mousavi] Darchei for writing that Mr. Jannati also held a meeting similar to the Berlin Conference abroad. He said that more than 30% of the ballot boxes have been counted and there is more than 10% deviation.

Mr. [Mohammad Mehdi] Mozaffari, the editor-in-chief of the "Javan" newspaper, came. He requested an interview, consulted on policies, and said that newspapers on this side have also formed a group to act in coordination. He brought the margin of his father, [Mr. Hossein Mozaffari], on "Arooh al-Wuthqa"; with the delivery of greetings and gratitude for my Friday sermons.

Mr. [Mehdi] Akbarzadeh, [advisor to the Minister of Agriculture], came. He gave a report on the status of the production of basic pesticide materials and said that due to the pressure from the [Environmental Protection Organization], the Zolun production unit has been closed and its new location has not been approved, but the production of herbicide pesticides compensates for it; he is worried about the change of Mr. Dr. [Eisa] Kalantari. Mr. [Mohammadali] Ansari Noghchi, the head of the Martyrs Foundation [of Rafsanjan], came and pleaded for exemption of the families of Rafsanjan martyrs from paying the deposit for water and electricity for residential units and insisted that I attend his son's wedding ceremony; he is a friend from before the revolution.

In the afternoon, Messrs. [Mohammad] Jafari Gilani, [Head of the Islamic Propaganda Office of Qom], and Taha Hashemi came and brought the first volume of the "Culture of the Quran" book, authored by me, which has just been printed; it is a very important work that has been the main goal of my Quranic work in prison, from which the "Guidance Commentary" has also emerged. Part (A) has become a large volume and they said that it is being welcomed in the Qom [seminary] and academics have also given it a good reception. They wanted to find out something about the Tehran elections and the possibility of my going to the parliament, which was not possible for them. They expressed satisfaction with the closure of the troublesome newspapers and asked me to make a trip to [the village of] Wasf [Qom] in the summer.

In the second round of the [sixth parliamentary] elections, the results are within the predicted range. In the afternoon, Mohsen, Mehdi, and Yaser came. We consulted on filing complaints against individuals and newspapers that have committed slander or insult against me and my family. The "Resalat" newspaper has initiated a new discussion that the President's selected group for pursuing the chain murders are wrongdoers and that they tortured the accused and then released them, and the suicide of Saeed Emami and the involvement of Mr. [Hamid] Sermad - who is the superior of Mousavi [Mostafa Kazemi], the main accused, and many other unanswered questions, and demands an explanation from Mr. [Seyed Mohammad] Khatami, [the President].
