He won the second gold medal for Iranian athletes in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, following Imam Ali Habibi. With this medal, along with two silver medals from the 1952 Helsinki and 1960 Rome Olympics, he remains the most decorated Iranian wrestler in Olympic history.

Takhti also achieved two championships and two runner-up positions in the World Wrestling Championships and earned the gold medal at the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games during his career.

He was active in traditional wrestling and Pahlavani sports, holding the title of Pahlavan (champion) of Iran for three consecutive years.
