Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for the lifting of sanctions at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Announcing the new sanctions, the US Treasury Department said Monday (February 25) that the sanctioned vessels are part of Iran's "shadow fleet" that exports millions of barrels of Iranian oil and petroleum products using aging and often unregistered tankers.

Abbas Araghchi called the sanctions on Iran "unjust" and said they have had a detrimental impact on the Iranian people and "limited access to basic necessities such as medicine and a healthy environment".

He called the sanctions a violation of the "fundamental human rights of the Iranian people" and caused "the suffering of millions" and called for the "immediate lifting of all unilateral sanctions."

In the new round of US sanctions announced today, Hamid Bord, CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company and Deputy Minister of Oil, and Abbas Asadrouz, CEO of the Iranian Oil Terminals Company, are among those sanctioned.
