مشورت سید محمد خاتمی با آیت‌الله خامنه‌ای برای استعفا از ریاست جمهوری

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani writes in part of his diary entry dated March 9, 2003:

Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani writes in part of his diary of March 9, 2003:

I was the leader’s guest that night; we discussed nuclear issues and the Agency’s positions.

It was agreed that we would not give up the right to have a fuel cycle; but we would continue the suspension until June, waiting for the case to be concluded, and if they issued a harsh resolution, we would reject it.

The leader expressed satisfaction with the election results and said: Mr. Khatami had consulted about resigning, but he opposed it and said: It would be harmful to him in the system and the country.

The presidential election was also discussed. I said: I am not ready to accept, think of someone else.

Footnote: In the diaries of 2003 and even 2002, there are many references to persuading Hashemi to participate in the early elections or the next term after Khatami, which he refuses for reasons that are not clearly explained (in the currently published books).
