Today, the situation on the war fronts in Iraq did not change much. The bombardments intensified. The United States claims that it has approached Baghdad and that it has also airlifted forces into the areas around the cities of Al-Amarah and Kut, with the aim of encircling Baghdad.

The Arab foreign ministers’ summit in Cairo ended with a statement condemning the aggression against Iraq and calling on the United Nations to intervene. Kuwait had requested that a clause condemning missile strikes on Kuwait be added, but it was not accepted. Russia announced that the UN Security Council would soon hold a meeting to address the issue of the U.S. and British aggression.

In Afghanistan, an American military base has been attacked. Israel is also taking advantage of the situation to increase pressure on the Palestinians. Iraq claims that analysis of parts of several missiles used shows they originated from Israel, and has taken this as evidence of Israel’s undeclared participation in the war. The attackers have admitted to using depleted uranium in their munitions, despite the fact that its serious human risks are well known, and they are also using 10-ton bombs known as “Mother of all Bombs” as well as cluster bombs. Unofficial American sources have said that in case of being cornered, they might use small tactical nuclear weapons, which is very reckless.

I went to my office, but due to ongoing illness I did not receive visitors. New Year visits were numerous. Mr. Hossein Marashi came and said that Mr. Mohammad Khatami had said in Khomein that the United States would quickly defeat Iraq and then act against Iran. I jokingly said that this reflects the fearful mindset of the Yazdis! There is doubt about a quick victory, and given the situation so far, America’s aura has faded, and it is not clear whether it can engage in new adventures so soon.

I attended the funeral ceremony for the late Dr. Mohsen Nourbakhsh at Arg Mosque. A large crowd was present. His passing has deeply affected many; he was an experienced and influential manager. It appears that an artificial heart valve had failed.

In the evening, my brother Mohammad and his family visited. Discussions in various circles are mostly focused on the issue of the attack on Iraq.
