Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – October 2, 1982

Early in the morning, I requested explanations from the Prime Minister's Office, the Islamic Republic News Agency, and the Ministry of Interior about last night's explosion. The Prime Minister consulted me about declaring a public day of mourning, but because of the conquest and victory, it was decided not to announce it today.

I asked Mr. [Ali Akbar] Nategh-Nouri for an explanation about the death of two to three million trout due to the leakage of liquids from municipal waste into Jajrud. He said they were investigating it. A large part of my time was spent studying Makasib al-Muharramah for the Friday prayer sermon.

At noon, I was a guest of Ahmad Agha with the President. Imam also came, and we prayed with him and had lunch. Because salt and sugar were forbidden for the Imam, he had a special meal. It was a very warm gathering. Before the meal and during it, we discussed various issues with the Imam. Before the Imam arrived and afterward, we ourselves discussed the situation of the Tudeh Party and its dangers, the ideological political weakness of the Army and the Air Force, the necessity of Mr. Khamenei's participation in Cabinet meetings to prevent disagreements among the ministers, the war, and other matters. Mr. Khamenei left at four-thirty.

Mr. Mohsen Rezaei came and, using a map, explained Operation Muslim ibn Aqil, in which the western heights of Somar overlooking Mandali in Iraq had been liberated. He spoke about divine assistance, future plans, and ... At night I returned home and studied. Mrs. Beheshti, the widow of Martyr Beheshti, called and spoke about resolving the inheritance tax issue—which consists of nothing but a residential house.
