Before noon, the Expediency Council held a meeting, and several important provisions were approved. In the afternoon, Messrs. Hossein Marashi and Ali Hashemi came. They reported that Mr. Karbaschi had been formally notified of his conviction. He had been given one week to report to prison, and they asked me to write a letter to the Leader. I spoke with the Leader by telephone. He said that He had not been informed of the matter. I asked Him to prevent the enforcement of a ruling that had serious problems, since apparently the Prosecutor General had not yet signed it.
Dr. [Majid] Qasemi, [Advisor to the Minister of Mines and Metals], came. He spoke about the advantages of transferring economic affairs to the private sector and expressed regret that the Construction Government’s efforts in this direction had slowed under pressure from others. He asked that we approve clear and comprehensive principles on the matter in the Expediency Council. Dr. [Hassan] Rouhani, [Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council], came. We discussed the future head of the Judiciary, the parliamentary elections, the possible Independence Party, and ways of overcoming the country’s problems.
Dr. [Ali] Abbaspour, representative of Tehran, came. He spoke about the weaknesses of the Ministries of Science and Health and about the country’s economic problems. He also discussed the weakness of university faculty organizations in the universities, owing to their lack of appeal among the public and students, as well as the right-wing faction’s lack of a coherent plan for the upcoming parliamentary elections. He asked for an interview for their weekly publication [= Shoma, the organ of the Islamic Coalition Party].
In today’s newspapers, the disqualification of five people elected to the Tehran City Council was the leading story, along with the serious dispute between the Ministry of Interior and the Oversight Board, the impeachment of the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and serious protests by workers against the parliamentary decision exempting workshops with three or fewer workers from the Labor Law. Overall, the left- and right-wing factions were engaged in heated confrontations on several fronts.
Faezeh came and brought a draft complaint against the Revolutionary Court for my advice. Fati came and reported on the situation in Rafsanjan and the disagreements within the family following the negative remarks made by Aqa Sheikh Mohammad [Hashemian] during Friday prayers about the Zan newspaper. Mehdi reported on his trip to Malaysia and his negotiations with the Malaysian gas company regarding cooperation with Iran.
