Today's open session made no progress. The bill on non-enforcement of eviction orders for rented housing was not approved. There appeared to be a sharia objection. Parliament showed that in cases where religious rulings (ahkam-e shar'i) are involved, it is strict and inflexible.
The bill for nationalizing the assets of the Pahlavi family also hit an obstacle. Because the possibility was raised that nationalization in some countries might entail compensation claims, the committee, the government, and the proponents were unable to push it through.
At noon, Ahmad Aqa Khomeini and Mr. Sane'i were my guests for lunch. Discussions were held regarding Hossein Aqa and the Mashhad statements; we must try by any means necessary to keep him protected. We did not consider confrontation advisable and suggested the path of guidance, and they complained severely about the management of the television [broadcasting].
The Friday prayer leader of Shahin Shahr and the governor-general of Isfahan came and spoke of the problems of Shahin Shahr and Fooladshahr—which are newly built and house diverse populations—and sought solutions. It was agreed that we would help.
Captain Sharif al-Nasab came. He recommended that we win over General (Timsar) Zahirnejad, as he is an honest man, and not let Bani-Sadr win him over.
In the evening, I participated in [the meeting of] the Central Council of the Islamic Republican Party. The discussion was focused on participating in the television debate. The majority said we should not participate due to the presence of the Tudeh Party and the Feda'iyan, and because the liberal faction is not coming. [They argued] the fault lies with them, and the weapon will be taken out of their hands. Mr. Beheshti was in favor of participating and was himself prepared to join the discussion. Since the Imam prefers that we ourselves do not participate, this is also considered an obstacle.
At night, I participated in the joint meeting of parliamentary representatives and executive officials of the party. There was a roundtable about the budget. Then I provided an analysis of the current situation based on the public opinion poll results from the Statistics Office. I explained the good standing of the Imam's Line as well as the strengths and weaknesses. These statistics consider the Imam's Line to be the most popular.
