At nine in the morning, I went to the Imam’s residence for the meeting of the representatives of the Parliament with the Imam. The meeting was being held on the occasion of the anniversary of the opening of the Parliament. It was supposed to be a private, closed-door meeting, but the Imam preferred that it be open and that the proceedings be broadcast, and it was a good thing that he did. First, I spoke for a while.
I gave a report on the work and situation of the Parliament and asked the Imam for his guidance and support for strengthening the Parliament.
The Imam delivered an important historic speech. It was so significant that observers said it was a new revolution. It was so forceful toward opponents of the Imam’s line that some people could not believe it would be broadcast. He humiliated and weakened the liberals, especially Bani-Sadr and the Freedom Movement of Iran. He told them to mind their own business and that they had no right to interfere, and described the Parliament’s decisions as beyond challenge.
He strongly and explicitly supported the clergy, the Imam’s line, and the Revolutionary Guards. May God preserve him.
Before our meeting began, the members of the Supreme Judicial Council had been with the Imam, except for Mr. Rabbani-Shirazi. Ahmad Agha was also there. I joined part of their meeting as well. The discussion was about our position toward the opponents and the liberals. Good points were made and good decisions were taken. It was decided that the three-member committee would explicitly state their violations. The courts would also act firmly, even with regard to shutting down anti-revolutionary newspapers.
The Imam said that the Parliament should firmly maintain its legal position and said that Bani-Sadr was eliminating himself because of his unscrupulous associates. Ahmad Agha was also helping considerably. I came home at noon. Effat, Yasser, and Mehdi were also there. Lunch was very good and warm, and Yasser made up for my absence from dinner for two nights by having me present at lunch.
In the afternoon, we had a public session. There was a five-hour discussion of the budget. The opponents spoke with very little substance, while the supporters responded very well; KhalKhali and Ansari.
The liberals in the Parliament were very embarrassed because of the Imam’s remarks. The Imam’s remarks also had a significant effect on the atmosphere in the Parliament. Without them, the budget debate would have become very contentious and tense. The opponents had been disarmed, and the supporters were calm.
