At noon, the Prime Minister’s Office informed me that the Iraqis had bombed the city of Baneh in [Kurdistan] Province and a number of people had been martyred and wounded, and that they had hit two oil platforms in the Nowruz area of the Persian Gulf, which had caught fire, and saboteurs had blown up the Tabriz-to-Urmia oil pipeline. Dr. Velayati [Minister of Foreign Affairs] informed me that Radio America had reported the expulsion of three of our diplomats from Russia. He thought that we should also expel three people and announce it. I said to consult with Mr. the President; he was opposed. I emphasized that the United Nations envoys - whose work was finished and who had come to Tehran - should be taken to Baneh, so that they could see today’s crime.
Near sunset, I was informed that the fire caused by the bombing of the oil wells at sea had been extinguished and the damage had not been extensive. The United Nations officials had agreed to go to Baneh tomorrow. They had contacted their headquarters and it had been approved. At night, the wife of Mr. Salari, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Argentina, came and made an appointment for her husband. [The head of] the IRGC [Protection and Intelligence] came and expressed concern that I and [Mr.] the President were scheduled to attend the opening ceremony of the Parliament exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Arts; he considered security to be weak. Mr. [Mohammad] Emami [Kashani] called and consulted about the subjects of the sermons for the upcoming Friday prayers. He is scheduled to lead [the Friday prayers].
