Engineer [Abdolsamad] Khanfari, director of Iran Hofaran Company, came to see me. He complained about the General Inspection Organization, saying that it was interfering with his work and the manufacture of industrial components. His company manufactures parts for oil drilling rigs, helping to save foreign currency. He had approached me because such initiatives had received support during the Reconstruction period.
Messrs. [Mohsen] Qara’ati, [the Supreme Leader’s representative in the Literacy Movement], and [Qorbanali] Dorri Najafabadi came to see me. They asked me to begin teaching a course on Quranic exegesis that would be useful to university students and educated audiences. Mr. [Mohsen] Qomi, [the Supreme Leader’s representative at the universities], had made a similar request earlier. I told them to coordinate the arrangements with a university.
In the afternoon, Mr. [Beitollah] Masoumi, Friday Prayer Leader and president of the Islamic Azad University of Torbat-e Heydarieh, came to see me. The directors of Islamic Azad University came to mark the seventeenth anniversary of its founding. Dr. [Abdollah] Jasbi, [president of Islamic Azad University], presented a report. The university had 700,000 students, 40,000 school pupils, 15,000 academic staff members, and four million square meters of built-up space.

Today, the Supreme Leader’s comments at his meeting with publishers the previous day attracted considerable attention in domestic and international newspapers and political circles. He had expressed support for the Guardian Council and its nezarat-e estesvabi (vetting and supervisory authority over elections), the law prohibiting satellite images, and the need to prevent the publication of immoral foreign materials. These remarks were being interpreted as opposition to Mr. [Seyyed Mohammad] Khatami and as support for the conservatives.

Ehud Barak’s victory in the Israeli elections was also described as a political earthquake and welcomed by supporters of Middle East peace negotiations. Israeli military officials immediately called for a withdrawal from southern Lebanon and openly acknowledged that Israel could not currently wage war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
[Sergei Stepashin], Mr. [Boris] Yeltsin’s nominee for prime minister, easily won a vote of confidence in the Russian parliament. This was seen as a sign that the Communists were retreating in the face of Yeltsin’s offensive.
