Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 19, 1982

I stayed home until 3:00 PM. I read, walked, and rested. Before noon, several young men from Qom came and brought a design for men's clothing to prevent the imitation of the West. I offered guidance based on Islamic teachings that it should be simple, beautiful, unpretentious, modest, comfortable, and free of unnecessary elements.

The Imam had a meeting with the families of the martyrs, and from morning until noon, the sound of slogans and Takbir resounded in the adjacent alleys, as is usual on the days of the Imam's meetings. At noon, in a call with the Karbala Headquarters at the front, I spoke with the Commander of the Ground Forces. They reported that Iraq had attacked today and retreated after leaving behind a number of prisoners, thirty destroyed tanks and armored personnel carriers, and heavy casualties; we also suffered six martyrs. Mohsen called from Belgium and spoke about embassy affairs, incorrect agency reports, and the positive influence of *Al-Shahid* newspaper in our embassies abroad.

In the afternoon, I went to Parliament to attend the Presidium meeting. After setting next week's schedule, we discussed completing the construction of the old Parliament building for the future; the core work was approved, and it was decided that the submitted plan be reviewed. We discussed the dispute between the Parliament Staff Cooperative and the Logistics Department; we ruled in favor of the employees and decided it should be rectified.

The Ambassador of Hungary arrived and had no important matter. Mr. [Mohammad Ali] Shar'i came and complained about Mr. [Abdol-Majid] Ma'adikhah for his lack of attention to the Propaganda Council. I slept at Parliament at night.
