At 8:30 a.m., Mehdi and I went to the Telecommunications Research Center. Our visit lasted until noon. We began with a general briefing, followed by a tour of several research projects. We also viewed an exhibition of related products, which was quite interesting. After an interview, I gave a brief address to the staff before heading to the office.
In the evening, a barber came to give me a haircut. My family arrived to watch some films—specifically, two movies by [Mohsen] Makhmalbaf that have been denied public screening permits: *Love* and *Nights of Zayandeh Rud*. Following their screening at the festival, they faced strong objections from religious groups and the media, though the themes themselves are not necessarily objectionable.
Mr. [Mostafa] Pourmohammadi visited. He reported on an emerging anti-Saddam movement within the Iraqi army and discussed a new initiative by [Manouchehr] Ghorbanifar regarding the hostages and our claims against the United States. I instructed that negotiations regarding the latter be halted, while directing that the former be followed up on.
Early in the evening, I visited Ayatollah Khamenei. He returned home from the hospital today; he is doing well and is in good spirits. Mr. Mirmohammadi [Chief of Staff to the President] informed me that Ayatollah Montazeri fell last night and injured his hand; I told him to go and pay a visit. Tehran has experienced good rainfall over the past two days, which is a welcome development.
