Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 14, 1983

Early in the morning, Dr. Sheibani came and asked for help in obtaining loans from the banks to complete the university buildings and also for arranging a meeting between the Congress guards and Imam. I went to [the] Manzariyeh [camp] to attend the Congress general session. We removed several unnecessary items from the agenda. [Ayatollah] Mr. Khamenei chaired the session, and I returned home. There are concerns in the two factions of the party; because of the atmosphere being stirred up against each other.

Mr. [Mousavi] Ardebili and Mr. [Fazlollah] Mahallati came to our home from serving Imam. Mr. Mahallati insisted that we think of something so that, in the plan [to establish the Ministry of] Intelligence at this stage, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps would not be completely stripped of responsibility for intelligence. He has also written to Imam about it. Then Mr. [Mohsen] Rafiqdoust also came for the same purpose.

Mr. [Mousavi] Ardebili said; he had raised with Imam the matter of transferring the duties of the staff for following up on Imam's eight-point decree to the Supreme Judicial Council. We had previously held the same view. Imam has also accepted it. They should formally request it and it should be approved. They also spoke with Imam about the war; Imam said that we must fight on the battlefield and should not strike the cities.

In the afternoon I also went to the Congress. Before the elections began, I delivered an extensive speech about the party and organization.  Elections were held for the Central Council and the Arbitration Council.

Mr. Mousavi Jazayeri [Friday Prayer Leader of Ahvaz] privately spoke about some of the confrontations among the representatives of Khuzestan; he was dissatisfied with them. Mr. Qazi [Friday Prayer Leader of Dezful] asked for a well-known speaker for the ceremony commemorating the martyrs of Andimeshk and Dezful. I sent word to Mr. Yazdi, the deputy speaker of Parliament, asking him to go. I came home at night. Ahmad Aqa came and reported that Iraq had attacked Qasr-e Shirin today and had been driven back. We talked about the party and the need to resolve the problems it has with the clerics in the cities.
