Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – May 1, 1981

Early in the morning, a call came from the Imam's office. Mr. Sane'i informed [us] that last night there was shooting at the Heshmatieh Garrison and that now the garrison is surrounded by the IRGC (Sepah) and the Committee (Komiteh). I contacted the IRGC (Sepah); it turned out to be true. The truth of the matter is not yet clear; it was agreed that they would investigate and inform [us].

I asked the Army Joint Staff; they said it was not important. Last night, an unknown person fired into the garrison, and they returned fire from inside. The Committee (Komiteh) and the IRGC (Sepah) thought something was happening inside [and] surrounded the garrison. In the morning, when day broke, the siege was lifted.

However, Mr. [Mohsen] Reza'i, head of IRGC (Sepah) intelligence, considers the matter deep-rooted, and it is set for them to report after investigation.

I left home to visit the disabled [veterans] of the war and the Revolution. They have turned the house of the fugitive Mahvi (the Shah's cousin), which is a very large and grand home, into a center for disabled veterans (Janbazan). There were sixty people, almost all of whom had spinal cord injuries and were paralyzed from the waist or neck down. Ms. [Fatemeh] Karroubi manages it on behalf of the Martyrs Foundation (Bonyad-e Shahid). It is managed well, and they were satisfied.

We performed congregational prayer with them. They attended the congregation in wheelchairs, and we ate lunch with them. They had chelo kabab.

In the evening and night, we were invited to the wedding of the daughter of Mr. Mahdavi Kani, Minister of Interior. Effat went together with Sa'id, Fati, Ms. Mofatteh, Ms. Bahonar, Ms. Ma'adikhah, and the Imam's daughter. But when I was ready to go, Faezeh and Hamid arrived, so I did not go. I also had no desire to participate in such events during wartime. Ahmad Aqa Khomeini was also supposed to come to our home early in the evening, [but] informed us of his cancellation.
