Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 8, 1983

I read the reports and made up for three days of falling behind in [writing] my [daily] memoirs. I spoke by telephone with Mr. [Mohammad-Mahdi] Rabbani Amlashi and Ahmad Agha about the new members of the Guardian Council. At ten o'clock I went to Imam's residence to meet with Imam. I went there together with the President. He said: «Today the Islamic Republic revolves around you two; anything for which I have even a one-in-a-thousand suspicion that it could be harmful to you two, I consider contrary to Islamic law.» We spoke with Imam about the Cultural Revolution Headquarters and the Guardian Council.

At four in the afternoon I went to the Majlis. I attended the [Majlis] Presiding Board meeting. We arranged the programs and administrative affairs. Mr. [Seyyed Mohammad] Khamenei [Second Deputy Speaker of the Majlis] complained about public relations, saying that in its publicity it focuses more on the Speaker [of the Majlis] and a few others; he is right. The representatives' criticisms of the Presiding Board were conveyed. It was decided that they would respond.

Messrs. Ebrahimi and [Ghorbanali] Dori-Najafabadi [representative of Ardal] came. Mr. Ebrahimi spoke about the needs of the Afghans who had been left without support after the dissolution of the IRGC's Movement Units, and of the foreign students who are in Qom, and spoke of Mr. [Jalaleddin] Taheri's [Friday Prayer Leader of Isfahan] distress after the Friday Prayer Leaders' seminar incident, and asked us for help.

Ahmad Agha Marashi came and brought a petition from Rafsanjan in support of Sheikh Mohammad Hashemian, who had gone to the front in protest after the revolutionary courts in the counties were dismantled. At night, at the Prime Minister's Office, we had a meeting to address disagreements within the Cabinet over economic issues. Messrs. [Ahmad] Tavakoli [Minister of Labor and Social Affairs] and [Habibollah] Asgaroladi [Minister of Commerce] and Morteza Nabavi [Minister of Posts, Telegraph and Telephone] were on one side, and Messrs. Behzad Nabavi [Minister of Heavy Industries] and [Mohammad-Taqi] Banki [Minister without Portfolio and Head of the Plan and Budget Organization], [Mostafa] Hashemi [Tabba Minister of Industries ] and [Hossein] Namazi [Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance] and [Mir-Hossein] Mousavi [Prime Minister] were on the other; the discussion was about general principles. I went to the Majlis to sleep.
