Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 7, 1983

After the prayer, I wrote a message for the Jihad seminar. I read the reports. I went to the open session and stayed in the session until ten o'clock. I went to the Guardian Council to conduct the drawing of lots. [Ayatollah Khamenei] the President, the Prime Minister, [Ayatollah Mousavi Ardabili] the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, [Ayatollah Sanei] the Prosecutor General, and Ahmad Aqa were there. We joked and had some fun, centered around the anxious state of the members of the Guardian Council regarding the result of the drawing; the drawing was held. Messrs. Rabbani [Amolshi] and Mahdavi Kani and Rezvani from among the jurists, and [Mehdi Hadavi, Mohsen Hadavi] the two brothers and [Goudarz] Eftekhari Jahromi from among the legal experts were selected. Right there, we consulted about the new members.  

At noon I came to the Majlis. [Mr. Ahmad Bahrami] the representative of Paveh came and spoke of the new offensive by the counterrevolutionaries in western Bakhtaran and complained about the officials. The representatives of Khuzestan and the president and officials of Ahvaz University came; they were concerned about the migration of professors and students from Ahvaz University because of living difficulties in Ahvaz and the lack of possibility of providing extracurricular assistance. I spoke with the Prime Minister about making additional facilities available to them to retain them.

In the afternoon, the [Islamic Republic] Party's student unit came and had some things to say about the congress and... I met with members of the Supreme Council of the [Islamic] Revolution of Iraq. Mr.    

[Seyyed Mahmoud] Hashemi [Shahrudi ] the president of the [Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution of Iraq] discussed the matter and I also spoke at length. Mr. Montazeri's representative at the Teacher Training University came with his associates. They were upset about the wrongdoing they had committed; because they had been condemned. I told them to submit to the law and not to worry about the reaction and exploitation by their opponents. He said that Mr. [Mohieddin] Fazel Harandi was scheduled to condemn their action at the university tomorrow.

Mr. [Mohammad Hassan] Zorq, the deputy head of IRIB, came and was concerned about the opposition he was facing and spoke of resigning. I gave him moral support. The board of directors of the Carpet Company came and were very upset about the position taken by the "Imam's Order Follow-up Headquarters"; they considered it unjust and requested an investigation. A group from the Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office came and complained about the recent weakening and asked for help. Ayatollah Montazeri telephoned and proposed Messrs. Javadi Amoli and Seyyed Abbas Khatam for the Guardian Council.
