Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 6, 1983

I went to the Majlis. I read the reports. The public session began at seven-thirty in the morning. I offered condolences for the death of Ayatollah [Mohammad-Ali] Angaji in Tabriz, during the Fifteenth of Khordad demonstration.

The bill on banking operations [without usury] was under discussion, as was the question from one hundred representatives to Mr. Asgaroladi [Minister of Commerce], which we treated as three questions and which took an hour and a half.

At noon, Dr. [Abbas] Sheibani brought three Iranian doctors who had come from Germany. They seemed to me to be opposed to the Revolution and presumably had come with a plan. They have practices in Germany or are university professors.

In the afternoon, a group from the Construction Jihad came and consulted about a seminar they are holding to examine the causes of rural migration and asked for a message. Then I had an interview with a reporter from the German magazine «Die Zeit»; about the Majlis, the Guardian Council, the war, and relations with the West.

Mr. Behzad Nabavi [Minister of Heavy Industries] came; he brought statistics on the growth of heavy-industry production; they are working well. He spoke about disagreements within the government and the upcoming elections. Mr. [Seyyed Esmail] Davoudi [Shamsi], head of the [Physical] Education Organization, came. He consulted on matters concerning sports and gave a report on the state of the councils and revolutionary institutions. The [Majlis] public relations official came with [Dr. Mohammad] Mostowfi, son of Mostowfi al-Mamalek, the prime minister [during the] Qajar [era]. He wants to place his father's documents and his father's house at the disposal of the Majlis and the Cultural Heritage [Organization]; he has many things.

I stayed at the Majlis at night and read the reports until eleven o'clock. I took care of some matters by telephone. I gave a telephone interview to the Islamic Republic newspaper about the trip to Qom. I told [Dr. Mohammad-Ali Najafi], the Minister of Science, by telephone not to hold up the Teacher Training University issue for other purposes. He is accused of wanting to use this situation to resolve the problem of the principle of Ayatollah Montazeri's representation.
