Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 14, 1987

I went to the assembly early in the morning. I stayed in the meeting until ten o'clock. The army's plan is over. We had the election of the board of directors. With 183 votes in favor and 12 votes against and 35 abstentions, I was elected as the chairman of the parliament. Mr. [Mahdi] Karroubi returned to the second vice and Mr. [Mohammed] Yazdi went to the first vice. Mr. [Sidreza] Zavarei took the place of Mr. Hashem Zaei; Limited success for conservatives.

I had several meetings before noon, mostly on war matters. In the afternoon, Mr. Tajik, the governor of Hormozgan, came. He reported on the state of the province. Mr. Mousavi, the Imam's representative in the western clergy of the country, came. He demanded the establishment of a university for Sunnis of the West. Consulted on current affairs and especially new immigrants.

In the evening, I met with [Mr. Yuri Vornetsov] the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union. He spoke from a low and friendly position and wanted to develop relations. I also emphasized the need for Soviet neutrality in the war to open the way for the development of relations.

Agricultural promoters came with the Minister of Jihad [Construction]. I spoke to them. I participated in the meeting of the central council of the [Islamic Republic] party. The subject of the discussion was the assignment of the party's property and documents. We decided to get permission from the imam to take care of its affairs.

The meeting of the heads of state was held in the office of Ayatollah Khamenei. [Mr. Mirhossein Mousavi] Prime Minister did not participate in the meeting because he is leaving for Türkiye tomorrow. We discussed the Persian Gulf crisis. It was believed to have fallen from strength, although the Ministry of Intelligence knows the conspiracy deeply. We talked about distribution and price control and other current issues. I arrived home late.
