Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – January 8, 1991

I went to my office early in the morning. Before nine o'clock in the morning, Dr. [Hassan] Habibi, [first vice president], came to consult about negotiations with Ezzat Ibrahim, [Saddam Hussein's deputy and] vice president of the Iraqi Revolutionary Council; He is supposed to come to Tehran today. I usually do not accept appointments before nine o'clock in the morning.

The managers of the selection centers of the departments came. Mr. [Qorban Ali] Darri [Najafabadi, Chairman

The Supreme Selection Board] reported. I spoke to them and confirmed them. We were supposed to have a meeting of the Supreme Council of Environmental Protection, but it did not reach the quorum. Dr. [Hadi] Manafi, [head of the Environmental Protection Organization], used the time and raised some issues.

The Minister of Atomic Energy of China came. He expressed his happiness about the agreements reached with Iran regarding the transfer of rocket fuel manufacturing technology and requested that his meeting and trip remain confidential.

[Mr. Dubai], the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of India came and brought the letter of the Prime Minister of India. He talked about the problems that have plagued them due to the rising price of oil and the Persian Gulf crisis and asked that we give oil on credit to India. He promised to protect the security of Muslims.

In the evening Mr. [Aladdin] Boroujerdi, [Deputy for Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs] came. He gave a report on the state of relations with Asian countries and asked for more help for the Afghan Mujahideen. He also asked for permission to enter into negotiations with the Afghan government to amend the Hirmand water usage agreement for the benefit of Iran. I accepted

Mr. [Syed Mohammad Baqer] Hakim, [Speaker of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution of Iraq] and his brother, [Sayed Abdul Aziz Hakim] and [Sheikh Ali] Moula, [Executive Secretary of the Supreme Assembly] came. He told some of the problems of Iraqis as usual. He consulted about participating in the Iraqi opposition conference in London and discussed the issues of Iraq and the future of the region.

The Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution had a meeting at night. The plan to change the secondary education system was approved and the possible change of letters in Soviet Azerbaijan was discussed. I came home at night. My parents and my sister Tahira were sleeping and the children were outside.
