Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – December 3, 1989

I came to my office at half past seven in the morning. I did the work until nine o'clock. In the reports, the meeting between the leaders of the Soviet Union and the United States on the deck of the ship on the coast of Malta and the continuation of conflicts in the Philippines are at the top. The nurses came to visit. [Mr. Iraj Fazel] The Minister of Health and a nurse spoke and I also spoke.

Dr. Velayati came. He gave the report of his trip to five countries and said that Sultan Qaboos [King of Oman] promised to try to make the countries of the south of the Persian Gulf neutral in relation to Iran and Iraq, and called the previous announcement about Iraq's sovereignty over the Shatt al-Arab distorted and requested that Iran not support the opposition of the southern countries.

Mr. [Abul Qasim] Wafi [Yazdi] came. He announced his readiness to work with me as a consultant on cultural fields and work in the university and expressed his regret for not participating in the current session of the parliament. I told him to cooperate with the judiciary, which they need more.

Tabriz representatives came. They proposed to replace [Mr. Akbar Parhizkar] the governor and [Ayatollah Muslim Malkouti] Imam Juma of Tabriz and requested for the plans of the province and the creation of a free trade zone in Sufian.

Dr. [Hasan] Habibi came, the current affairs of the country were discussed. Mohsen came and asked for an explanation about the Qazvin agriculture and industry plan inspection; I explained. I said that the delegation to Khuzestan came to the conclusion that they should provide the means to accelerate the increase of oil production. We had a government meeting. At night, we were the guests of Ayatollah Khamenei. We had many issues in both programs.
