Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – August 21, 1986

First, I visited the Holy Shrine and participated in the joint morning ceremony of the armed forces at the barracks of the 77th Lashkar in Khorasan and gave a speech to them. They held a parade and from there we went to visit the Kabkan site, which the Americans built during the time of the Shah to control the nuclear, missile and satellite operations of the Soviet Union. I spent two or three hours listening to the officials' explanations. It is not known whether we will be able to use it in the future or not. We have to think to fix the technical defects of the devices and learn how it works. We had gone with three helicopters. It is an important height that is extremely important for controlling the Soviet soil, but we cannot use it for the time being to avoid making the Russians sensitive. It was decided that the news of our visit will not be broadcast. We returned to Mashhad at noon.

In the evening, I talked to the students at Imam Reza University. It was an important meeting. I also spoke in detail about the duties of the clergy at this point. It was a pleasure for me to walk through the people in and around the holy courtyards. People were also happy when they suddenly saw us among them. At night, my companions were guests of Astan Quds Razavi at my place of residence.
