Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – April 21, 1983

At 7:30 in the morning I went to the public session of the [Islamic Consultative Assembly]. Before the agenda, I spoke about the crime committed by the Iraqi army in Dezful. The credentials of Mr. [Mohammad Jasim] Saadati, the representative of Mahabad, were brought up; because of his background and ties to the Komala [Party] and the Democratic [Kurdistan] Party, and his failure to condemn them in his statements and speeches before the agenda, they were rejected by 141 votes against and 22 in favor. There were many abstentions. The credentials of Mr. [Seyyed Hassan Vaez Mousavi] Anzabi from Urmia, who was accused of cooperating with Seyyed Hassan Hojjat and the Akhbari faction, were approved. During the recess, I spoke to the spectators. At noon I had several meetings. In the afternoon I gave an interview for the anniversary of Martyr Sadoughi. The head of the Assembly's public relations office came and told me about the plans for commemorating the Assembly's third anniversary.

Major Torabi from the [Army] advisory office came and had some matters to discuss. Then I attended a meeting of the directors-general and deputy ministers of the Ministry of Health who had come to the Assembly; I listened to their report and spoke to them. We had a meeting of the central council of the [Islamic Republic] Party. We discussed the Imam's order to remove the slogans "Death to America" and "Death to the Soviet Union," so that a method of removing them would be chosen in a way that would not provoke a bad reaction. Late at night I returned to the Assembly. The children were there too. We had dinner and went to sleep.
