In Iran, where religion has always been at the forefront of social movements over the past century, one of the most notable effects and consequences of the Mahsa protests is the absence of religion in the demonstrations.

There is neither clergy, nor mosques, nor any religious symbols present. In the 2009 protests, there was the slogan "Ya Hossein, Mir Hossein."
