This directive re-imposes a stringent sanctions policy against Tehran. But what exactly does this order entail, and which parts of Iran's economy are targeted? In the introduction to this directive, it states that maximum pressure is being applied to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and counter its destructive influence.Iran is described as "the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism," which has declared hostility towards the United States and its allies since its inception in 1979.Donald Trump in this directive holds Iran responsible for Hamas killings on October 7 and Houthi attacks, stating that Tehran supports groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and other terrorist networks. The document also references Iran's role in physical attacks on U.S. citizens abroad—kidnappings and murders—suppression of Iranian women’s rights—and widespread human rights violations.Following the introduction, Section 1 outlines U.S. policy toward Iran:
