Indeed, I believe the highest skill one should learn in religion is ethics.
The matters you mentioned may not be explicitly stated in religious texts as such, but the hadith you referenced is quite well-known:
"إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ مَکَارِمَ الْأَخْلَاق" (I have been sent only to perfect good character).
The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) indeed highlighted that the purpose of his mission was to complete noble virtues.
