On September 10, 1980, following increased diplomatic tensions after the Islamic Revolution, the last remaining staff of the British embassy in Tehran left Iranian soil.

With this action, the Swedish embassy was designated as the protecting power for British interests in Iran.

This event was part of a series of diplomatic developments that took shape after the 1979 revolution, especially after the occupation of the American embassy on November 4, 1979, and led to a sharp decline in Iran's relations with Western countries.
