Mohsen Hashemi told Etemad Newspaper:

Ayatollah Rafsanjani coordinated with moderates and reformists to ensure that after Ahmadinejad, someone would come who would not pursue extremism in society, who would be moderate and lead the country in the right direction, saving it from its predicament and preserving the dignity of the clergy.

He told some officials, including Mr. Khatami, to register; if they were approved, they would have votes. If not, any approved candidate would become president. However, no one stepped forward.

Given the pressure he faced from various sources and the expectations for him to enter the arena and discussions about saving the country, he selflessly decided to run, doing what he had urged others to do since no one was willing to take action. Ultimately, he registered, even at around 80 years of age. However, what happened was as Mr. Moslehi described.

Unfortunately, they committed a truly unfair act by going to the Guardian Council and convincing the scholars that if he became president, it would not benefit the country. Since he had support on the streets, they used his age as an excuse to disqualify him.

When this incident (the passing of the late Hashemi) occurred, given that he was practically well, managing his meetings, exercising, and swiftly climbing the stairs at the Assembly, we had no sense that he was close to death. For our family, it was nothing; for the people, it was a real shock, generating numerous rumors about his passing that have yet to dissipate. If we speak negatively, they say we are seeking martyrdom.

On the other hand, the authority has still been unable to solidify the reason for his passing as a normal death; it occurred under abnormal circumstances. Even with the reports from the Security Council, Mr. Rouhani noted that the Security Council's report lacks necessary solidity. The community still has these questions, and we hope that his passing will be deemed natural so that all of us, God willing, can move past this issue that continues to trouble our family and the public.
