Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – September 1, 1983

I was at home all day. I read part of a new book written by someone named Parand and apparently published with American help, in a very fine edition, and sent to various figures. The author is fiercely counterrevolutionary and a lackey of foreigners and brazen. Almost all the contents of the book are lies and fabrications. He quotes Mr. [Morteza] Pasandideh, the Imam's brother; he has accused all the sacred institutions of the Revolution and Islam and the Leader and the Leader's family and all the sacred episodes in the history of Iran's century-long Islamic movements of corruption and of being products and creations of the British and... Until now, I have never seen a book that is entirely like this in its lies and.... Surely there is no one in the world who would believe it. Part of my time was spent reviewing the books in my library; three years ago, when moving to the new house, some of the books had been set aside, and now they have brought them; I have to arrange them.

I informed Mr. Nateq-Nouri [Minister of the Interior] by telephone that Ayatollah Montazeri was ready to meet and make amends for the slight in the statement from his office. They brought the reports from my office. The French are satisfied with our actions in ending the hijacking, but some devils are trying to accuse Iran; they infer this from the correspondence between some of the hijackers' demands and our policy. My office asked me to send a representative to Marivan, which was bombed by the Iraqis today and 45 people were martyred and 200 wounded. I said that Mr. [Ali] Narizadeh, the representative from Marivan, should go with another representative.
