Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – November 2, 1982

Early in the morning I called the front headquarters. It turned out that the operation had been successful on four axes and unsuccessful on one. We have retaken the strategic heights, the oil-producing areas, and several oil wells that had been occupied by the Iraqis, and we have gained a commanding position over Teyeb township and the Iraqi supply road.  

Before the order of business, I spoke about the conquest. The agenda was the impeachment of the Minister of Housing, Mr. Engineer [Shahab al-Din Parvin] Gonabadi. Messrs. [Mohammad Ali] Ferdowsi-Pour, Dr. [Hassan] Rouhani, [Mohammad Ali] Movahedi-Savoji, and [Seyyed Mojtaba] Mirjafari spoke against the minister. The minister also defended himself briefly, and the rest of his defense was postponed to the next session. During the recess, the presidium elected the Rules of Procedure Commission.

At noon, a group of representatives from Kerman Province came and complained about Mr. [Morteza] Fahim [Kermani]'s actions against the governor. Dr. [Hamid] Bahrami had come from The Hague and spoke about doubts regarding the competence of Mr. Mohammadi, the official in charge of the Algiers Declaration, and Mr. Kashani, and about the importance of the work at The Hague; his purpose was to gain assurance of our confidence in him, which I gave him. In the afternoon, Mr. Elahi, the head of the Navy's political-ideological department, came, gave a report on the force, and also criticized the commander. A group of program-planning managers came, and I spoke to them.

I contacted the front. It turned out that fighting was still continuing on one axis. We have taken about five hundred prisoners. In the afternoon, Engineer [Mehdi] Chamran came and complained that, in the recent developments, some of the Lebanese Shiite forces had been expelled on charges of compromise, and he believed that our ambassador was not a factor for unity. Colonel [Mohammad] Hejazi, the police chief, also came and complained about the political-ideological department, saying that they interfere too much and do not have a paternal attitude or a clerical demeanor, and that their work gives the impression of intimidation and police methods, and he asked for support.
