Mr. Qazi Askar, one of the officials of the Secretariat of the Central Council of Friday Prayer Leaders, came and gave explanations about the events of the recent seminar and defended himself against the accusation that the seminar had an anti-party atmosphere and that there had been a deliberate delay in inviting [Ayatollah] Khamenei. But he had no answer regarding the letter they had prepared for the Imam. Near noon, we stopped by the [Manzariyeh] camp, where the party congress is to be held. It is a good place.
In the afternoon, Mr. Mohsen Rezaei informed me by telephone that the future plans for the fronts were ready. It was decided that they would bring them tomorrow night. Mr. [Ali Mohammad] Basharati telephoned; he asked for the names of the Tudeh Party infiltrators in the parliament who had been accused, and I told Mr. Mohsen Rezaei to provide them. Two members of the religious minorities have been named in the Tudeh members' confessions.
In the afternoon, I spoke with Ahmad Aqa about the war, and his view was that it would be better for us to move toward establishing peace. He was worried about Iraq's missile attacks on the cities, which were lowering the people's morale. He was satisfied with the reaction in the Western media to the arrest of the Tudeh members, as well as with the credibility and strengthening of the policy of neither East nor West. He wants to be on the Central Council of the [Islamic Republic] Party and run as a candidate at the congress, but the Imam has forbidden it. The Imam does not want him to work anywhere other than the household.
He criticized Mr. Taheri [the Friday Prayer Leader] of Isfahan's action against the party at the Friday Prayer Leaders' seminar and said he was thinking of making amends. He was worried about those around Mr. Montazeri and conveyed the Imam's concern, and it was decided that he would ask the Imam to send a message to the party congress.
Early in the evening, Mr. [Habibollah] Asgaroladi [Minister of Commerce] came to the house. He was upset about the atmosphere that had been created against the Ministry of Commerce and the question from one hundred members of parliament about rice, and consulted about how to deal with it. He intends to meet with the Imam and explain the situation, and believes that the [Economic] Mobilization Headquarters and his opponents have conspired and obstructed matters concerning rice.
This afternoon, the expelled Soviet diplomats left Iran. The Soviets have begun a propaganda counteroffensive. May God bring the outcome of the affair to good and ward off the evil of the superpowers from us.
