At 11:00 AM, Ahmad Aqa Khomeini called, saying that today a directive from the Imam was scheduled to be broadcast on the midday news prohibiting any musical tune, even if accompanied by an anthem; he wanted me to go to the Imam along with Mr. Beheshti and request that the Imam prevent the broadcast of this directive.
I refrained from going due to the necessity of my presence in the committee, due to a religious reservation (shobheh-ye shar'i) regarding preventing the implementation of a view given by the Imam and Marja' [Source of Emulation]—a religious reservation in the sense that if it is a fatwa, why should we not obey?—due to the unpropitious outcome of istikhara [seeking divine guidance], and because of the weak probability of our influencing the Imam's will if it was his definitive decision. However, Mr. Beheshti went and achieved results, and it was not broadcast. It is also proper that if it is the Imam's view, it should be implemented gradually without an announcement.
In the afternoon, we had a Presidium meeting and set the schedule for the following week, and for this reason I was unable to participate in [the meeting of] the Party's Central Council.
It was agreed that we would meet with Mr. Ziaur Rahman, President of Bangladesh, and Habib Chatti at the Prime Minister's Office, but I did not go. Later it turned out that they had not come either, as they had expected this meeting to take place at their hotel or their ambassador's residence, and Mr. Rajai had not agreed. Indifference was shown toward them on our part, which is not good, because they had requested to meet with me, Mr. Rajai, and Mr. Beheshti.
Messrs. Kianouri and Amou'i, leaders of the Tudeh Party, came and brought some intelligence. Usually, by providing information, they establish relations with officials, and they complained and protested that we do not trust them, do not allow them to travel abroad, and do not unseal their office. They believed that currently it is a suitable time to accept peace and end the war. I said, "America is also in favor of peace." They justified that America favors peace to save Saddam, but they are opposed to the Islamic Republic becoming too weakened as a result of the war. They also spoke of the possibility of the Americans creating sedition in Sistan.
Mr. Eje'i and Engineer Motamedi came and were concerned that the Imam's past endorsements had masked Mr. Bani-Sadr's true face.
