Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – March 5, 1983

Studying and writing my backlog of memoirs filled most of my time. Before noon, Ahmad Agha came and said that apparently the Düsseldorf court in Germany had agreed to Mr. Sadegh Tabatabaei's immunity, and that if released, he would be expelled from Germany as an undesirable person. The Imam's meetings had resumed after two weeks, and he was in good health. I asked him to convey Mr. [Mohammad Mehdi] Rabbani [Amlashi]'s appointment decree to the Guardian Council. I also told him to inform the Imam that I had chosen Mr. [Mohammad Reza] Mahdavi Kani for next week's Friday prayer. Earlier, Ahmad Agha had brought a message from the Imam saying that whoever I chose in my place, I should inform the Imam beforehand.

The Imam's office informed us that Mr. Khamenei had come to meet the Imam, so I went as well. We visited the Imam. He was in good health. He was concerned about the security of Mr. Khamenei's trip to India. Explanations were given. Even so, he was still not reassured, and reluctantly agreed. We asked him to provide financial assistance to the [Islamic Republic] Party. He agreed to give ten million tomans. He was surprised by the Party's expenses.

After lunch, Dr. Hadi and Mr. Pushnehgar, who had returned from India, came and spoke about their activities on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Conference and about the insecurity of the environment for Mr. Khamenei; they believed that he should not go to India. Today, news arrived that Saddam was not going either. It was decided that they would meet with him in the afternoon and give him their opinion, and that I would also call him. In the afternoon, Effat went to Faezeh's house to arrange her dowry.

Mr. [Abdolkarim] Mousavi Ardebili informed me that tomorrow night there would be a meeting at his house with the Qom Seminary Teachers' Society to discuss differing economic views, and they had asked me to attend as well.
