Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 30, 1982

Mehdi and I had our pre-dawn meal at the Majlis. The food at the Majlis was not to Mehdi's liking, so he ate nothing and has fasted almost without a pre-dawn meal. Fasting is difficult for children during these long days. I woke up at 7:30 AM and attended the open session. According to the new internal regulations, the committees are being reorganized. I attended the committee meeting and handed over the chairing of the session to Mr. [Mohammad Mousavi] Khoeiniha, who managed the meeting until the end.

The amendment to the Mandatory Social Security Insurance Law was discussed. Since many representatives were opposed to the principle of mandatory insurance, it was rejected. However, when they realized that the previous law would remain in effect—along with late fees and penalties remaining intact due to the bill's rejection—they regretted their decision. They submitted a double-urgency motion to the Majlis to eliminate interest and late payment damages.

At noon, I had several meetings, and in the afternoon, I held a meeting of the Presidium.

The families of the June 28 martyrs were guests of the Majlis for Iftar. I spoke to them for a while. Before the ceremony, Effat, the widow of Martyr Motahhari, and a number of her acquaintances came to my office. I stayed at the Majlis at night, and Mehdi stayed as well. He had brought a film, which he watched using the Majlis video player equipment.

I completed my work and read through the reports. There were no major developments. The war in Lebanon continues, and the ceasefire is being violated. Israel is pressuring Beirut. The siege is complete, and global reactions have put some pressure on the United States and Israel.
