In the afternoon, Mr. Seyyed Mohammad-Baqer Hakim [spokesman for the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq] came to the house and informed me that Mr. Seyyed Mohammad-Hossein Hakim, who had been detained, had gone to Istanbul, Turkey, and had contacted them by telephone from there and wanted to come to Iran to negotiate with him. He consulted with me about whether we should accept or not. It is possible that he will bring Saddam's threatening message to him, and perhaps something else may be raised. I said that tomorrow he should consult with the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, and I would also consult with the Foreign Ministry tomorrow, and then we would decide. They said that the news of the release of five senior members of Mr. Hakim's family had not been true. We also discussed the reasons for and objectives of Turkey's entry into Iraq; he did not have a clear view either; he attributed it more to the deterioration of the internal situation in Iraq, concern about the future, and the preservation of the oil pipelines.
