Memoirs of Akbar Hashemi – June 15, 1991

Mr. [Abdul Hossein] Vahaji, [Minister of Commerce] came. Reported the trip to Latin America and the commercial situation. He asked for permission to change the status of "commodity procurement and distribution centers", instead of liquidation as I said, to bring it to the Supreme Administrative Council.

Mr. Seyyed [Mohammed Hossein] Fadlullah came from Lebanon. He thanked the new policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran as the implementation of Islam and discussed the issue of helping to free the hostages. He said that in Lebanon there is no longer a field for military movements and the activities should be political. It is claimed that the people of South Lebanon cannot bear the problems of armed conflicts and he requested for more cultural works.

I spoke on the phone with [Mr. François Mitterrand], the president of France. He said that the allied forces are leaving Iraq. It was decided to make efforts for the presence of UN officials in Iraq to ensure the security of the people in front of the Iraqi army. He said he will come to Iran at the end of summer.

Dr. Velayati came to Mecca to say goodbye. Saudi Arabia was consulted for negotiations. Dr. [Syed Mohammad Reza] Hashemi, [Secretary of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution] came for the programs ordered by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. In the evening Dr. [Hasan] Habibi, [First Vice President] came for current affairs.

The Supreme National Security Council had a meeting. We negotiated about Afghanistan and Iraq. At night, we were the guest of leadership with Mr. Ahmad. We discussed the same contents of the Supreme National Security Council. I went to my office to sleep. I was awake until twelve o'clock at night.
